국세청이 최근 글로벌 한식기업인 더본코리아와 백종원 대표를 대상으로 강도 높은 세무조사를 벌인 것으로 21일 알려졌다. 탤런트 소유진씨와 결혼해 화제를 모은 백 대표는 최근 SBS '삼대 천황' 등 요리프로그램에 출연해 '먹방(먹는 방송)'으로 큰 인기를 누리며 예능계의 블루칩으로 떠올랐다.
사정당국에 따르면 국세청은 지난 7월 서울 강남구에 있는 더본코리아 본사에 서울국세청 조사4국 요원들을 투입해 세무 및 재무 관련 자료를 확보해 조사한 것으로 알려졌다.
특별세무조사를 전담하는 서울청 조사 4국은 국세청의 '중앙수사부'로 불리며, 주로 대기업의 탈세 의혹이나 비리 사건에 투입되는 조직이다.
국세청은 더본코리아뿐만 아니라 백 대표에 개인을 대상으로도 이례적으로 세무조사를 한 것으로 알려졌다.
더본코리아 측은 언론을 통해 "지난 2011년 정기세무조사 이후 4년 만에 받는 정기세무조사로 알고 있다"며 "두 달 이내에 조사가 끝난 상태"라고 밝혔다. 또한 백종원 대표 측 관계자는 "현재 국세청의 추징 처분을 기다리고 있으며, 추징액 규모에 대해서는 전달받은 바가 없다"면서 "국세청이 검찰 고발까지 하지는 않을 것으로 알고 있다"고 말했다.
