한국에 최초로 커피를 들여온 사람은 안토니엣 손탁이라는 인물로 알려져 있다고 한다. 초대 러시아 공사인 웨베르의 처형으로 웨베르가 한국에 부임할 때 따라 들어왔다. 손탁은 명성황후 시해 후 러시아공사관으로 몸을 피한(아관파천·1896) 고종황제를 가까이서 수발을 들면서 세를 키웠다. 고종은 신경증에 시달렸고, 주변 사람을 믿지 않아 왕의 식사를 챙기는 것은 손탁의 몫이었다. 그가 식후에 주던 커피를 마시기 시작한 고종은 환궁 뒤에도 커피를 계속 즐겼다.
