서울은 고단한 2020시즌을 보냈다. 시즌 중반 구단의 흥행을 함께했던 최용수 전 감독과 성적 부진을 아파트포장이사 이유로 결별했다. 이후에는 후임자를 선임하는 과정에서 난항을 겪었다. 내부 인사로 대행의 대행을 거듭하는 졸속행정으로 부진한 한 해를 보냈다. K리그 명가로 꼽혔던 서울의 위상에 금이 갔다. 무딘 공격력과 흔들리는 수비 등 전반적으로 팀이 하락세였다.
2021시즌은 실수를 반복하지 않기 위해 광주FC서 지도력을 강남사다리차 인정받은 박진섭 감독에게 정식 지휘봉을 건넸다. 곧장 팀 정상화에 돌입했다. 내부 단속부터 단행했다. 베테랑인 박주영과 오스마르와 계약을 연장했다.
서울은 “투철한 프로정신과 자기관리로 유명한 두 선수가 젊은 선수들이 주를 이루는 선수단에서 가지는 존재감은 남다르다”며 “박주영과 오스마르가 조영욱, 윤종규, 김진야 등 젊은 공사현장스카이차 선수들에게 롤모델이 될 수 있는 리더로서 구심점 역할을 해줄 것으로 기대한다”고 말했다. 두 선수 역시 “팀이 상위권으로 도약할 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다”고 재도약을 정조준했다.
