‘스포츠호치’ 등 일본 언론들은 30일, “요미우리 자이언츠가 에릭 테임즈와 계약에 합의했다”고 밝혔다. 계약 기간은 1년, 추정 연봉은 120만 달러(약 13억 원)이다.
테임즈는 KBO리그와 인연이 깊다. 동장구사다리차 2014시즌부터 NC 유니폼을 입고 3년 동안 리그를 압도했다. 통산 390경기 타율 3할4푼9리 472안타 124홈런 382타점 64도루의 기록을 남겼다. 2015시즌이 절정이었다. 역대 최초 단일 시즌 힛 포더 사이클 2회, 최초 40홈런-40도루 달성 등의 기록을 남겼고 리그 MVP를 수상했다.
3시즌 동안 KBO리그를 폭격한 테임즈의 활약에 메이저리그도 주목했고 2017시즌을 이사집센터 앞두고 미국 메이저리그 밀워키 브루워스와 3+1년 총액 1600만 달러에 계약을 맺으며 화려하게 복귀했다. 메이저리그 복귀 이후 첫 3시즌 동안 31홈런-16홈런-25홈런으로 장타력을 과시했다.
테임즈는 2020시즌을 앞두고 워싱턴 내셔널스와 1+1년 최대 700만 달러의 계약을 맺었다. 경기광주포장이사 올해 연봉은 300만 달러(약 32억 원), 2021시즌 구단 옵션 400만 달러(약 43억 원), 바이아웃 100만 달러(약 11억 원)의 조건이었다. 그러나 올해 타율 2할3리 3홈런 12타점으로 부진했고 방출됐다. 결국 테임즈는 요미우리 유니폼을 입게 됐다.
