장애인드론팀은 2017년 5월 우연한 기회에 창단됐다. 당시 전주월드컵경기장 내 드론축구전용구장에서 열린 시범경기를 본 이 단장이 장애인들이 할 수 있는 좋은 경기라며 전주시에 팀 창단을 제안한 것. 척수장애인 7명으로 전주시장애인드론팀을 창단한 이 단장은 “척수장애인들은 운동을 하기엔 여러 조건이 맞지 않아 선뜻 종목을 고르지 못한다”며 “하지만 드론축구경기를 보는 순간 이건 장애인들에게 딱 맞는 운동이라고 생각했다”고 말했다.
