K리그와 e스포츠 만남의 시작은 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19) 여파로 홍대스카이차 K리그 개막이 미뤄지면서 시작됐다. 배성재, 윤태진 아나운서의 ‘랜선 개막전’ 이후 각 구단 선수들이 자신의 팀 선수로 직접 스쿼드를 짜 게임을 치른 랜선 토너먼트 ’TKL(Team K-Leaue)컵’이 호응을 얻었다. 이 때 게임으로 먼저 우승한 송민규(21ㆍ포항)는 현실에서도 펄펄 날아 ‘영 플레이어상’을 거머쥐며 올해 K리그 최고 스타가 됐다.
연맹 관계자는 “eK리그 출범에 쏠리는 관심은 기대 이상이었다”고 했다. 일단 구단대표 선발전엔 전국에서 각 600개 팀이 참가 신청을 했다. 전북과 FC서울엔 각각 64개팀과 61개팀이 해외농구중계 참가해 경쟁률은 60대 1을 넘었다. 만 16세 이상이면 누구나 참여 가능했기에 구단 직원이나 현역 선수가 직접 참가한 사례도 있다.
타이틀스폰서로 LG전자가 참여했고, 개막 이후에도 더 많은 기업과 프로게이머들의 참여 문의가 이어졌다는 게 관계자 설명이다. 무엇보다 팬 확장성에 도움이 될 거란 기대도 손흥민중계 생겼다. e스포츠 세계로 먼저 다가선 K리그 선수들의 ‘현실 능력’이 궁금한 신규 팬 유치도 기대해볼 만하다. ‘휴식기’로만 여겨졌던 겨울이 eK리그로 채워지면서 유럽 리그처럼 2020~21시즌을 잇는 ‘겨울 시즌’을 풍성하게 만드는 대표 콘텐츠가 될 수도 있다.
