미국으로 돌아간 맥과이어는 올해 2월 탬파베이 레이스와 계약을 맺고 메이저리그 성남용달이사 재진입을 노렸으나 원하는 결과를 얻지 못했다. 탬파베이 산하 트리플A팀인 더햄 불스에서 지난 5월 방출된 뒤로 소속이 없었다. 맥과이어는 대만에 새 둥지를 틀고 새 도전에 나선다.
맥과이어를 비롯해 2021년 시즌에는 대만에서 KBO리그 출신 외국인 선수가 여럿 모인다. KIA(2016~2018년) 출신 헥터 노에시는 푸방 가디언스와 계약했다. 푸방에는 헨리 소사도 있다. 신촌사다리차 소사는 2012년부터 2019년까지 무려 8시즌 동안 KIA, 넥센, LG, SK 등 4팀에서 활약하고 대만으로 넘어갔다.
올해 KBO리그에서 뛴 제이크 브리검(전 키움)과 드류 가뇽(전 KIA)도 대만에 새 둥지를 틀었다. 둘은 웨이추안 드래곤즈와 계약을 맺었다. 퉁이 라이온스에는 화성포장이사 롯데 출신인 브록 다익손과 펠릭스 듀브론트가 있다.
키움 히어로즈가 유일한 '내부 FA(프리에이전트)' 김상수(32·전 키움)와 협상을 미루고 있다.
